Lets have some fun together

One of the great things about starting a new business is the opportunity it brings to be creative in new ways, and to make decisions without having to be second guessed or wait for approval.  Now it is just the two of us and it feels great.

I have always believed that you can’t run a business in a vacuum.  It is important to be part of a community.  To me, that means working with other businesses, but it also means participating in the community where the business is located.

Vancouver has a well known neighbourhood called the Downtown Eastside.  It is the poorest neighbourhood in Canada. That is where the largest concentration of to the trade designer businesses are located.  Imagine coming to work every day to such a contrasting experience.  Those of us that work in the design trade usually have lovely office environments, work with beautiful product and have a nice home to go back to.  As suppliers, we work with talented people who are all about creating the perfect environment for each client they work with.  The neighbourhood where our offices and showrooms are located is a place where there are people who need a hand  just to get through the day, every day.

A few months ago a group of us formed an organization called the Railtown Design District. You can check it out at www.railtowndesigndistrict.com

Last week we decided to add something to our very full plates – Not only will be be promoting our district to the design trade, working hard at our businesses, but we will also be dedicating some time to helping out in our neighbourhood.  There are so many great non-profit groups and generous hearted citizens working hard to improve the lives of our neighbours. Here is one I would like to tell you about.

The first Railtown Design District event is planned for July 19.  It is going to be a great event where designers and our businesses enjoy a very entertaining summer party.  Great food, live music and more. Watch the Railtown Design District Website for event updates.  We are looking forward to a great turnout where we can meet each other outside of the normal business environment, have some fun and get to know more about Karma Teachers Yoga and what they do in our neighbourhood.
